Short-term car rental
Having a rental car can be the most efficient way for you to get around after arriving in Australia, especially in cities or towns that do not have large public transport networks as central Sydney and Melbourne locations do.
A GPS system may come in handy to help you navigate your way around.
You can collect a rental car at the airport when you arrive as most airport locations will have car rental companies presence. Alternatively, you can also arrange to pick up a car after you’ve arrived, which means you’ll use taxi or shuttle services to get you from the airport to your place of stay initially.
However, it is advisable to book a rental car in advance, before your arrival in Australia, as you generally have more choices and options of cars and can negotiate better rates based on longer term hire. Having a temporary rental car reduces the pressure to buy a car immediately, gives you more choice to find one that suits your needs better and to negotiate a better deal.
Keep in mind that if you are going to a rural or regional Australian location, you may actually need to book a rental car in advance due to high demand which often leads to shortages.
Pre-booking a rental car from overseas also usually gives you unlimited mileage as opposed to limited daily mileage if you arrange one only when you arrive.
