Centrelink is a government agency responsible for delivering a wide range of services for the Australian community such as job search assistance, family benefits payment, social security payment, accessing courses, and claiming foreign pensions. There is a two-year waiting period for newly arrived residents to access most social security payments (exceptions apply depending on visa types). This is to ensure that new migrants can provide for their own support during their initial settlement in Australia, or by support from their sponsors.
Registering with Centrelink
If you are eligible for Centrelink services, it is a good idea to register as soon as possible after your arrival so that you have access to all the social benefits available to you after any applicable waiting period has passed. These benefits are such as child care benefit, child care rebate, dad and partner pay, family tax benefit, parental leave pay, schoolkids bonus, single income family supplement, and so on.
To register with Centrelink, visit a Centrelink Service Centre nearest to you and bring along your identity documents. You will then be provided with a Customer Reference Number (CRN) which you will need for future transactions with Centrelink. You also need this number to for Centrelink and myGov accounts online.
You can usually register for both Medicare and Centrelink at the service centre.
Check the Centrelink website for more information about services they offer, your eligibility and applicable waiting period based on your circumstance.
Centrelink and myGov online accounts
Once you have your Centrelink Customer Reference Number and Medicare number, you can register for a myGov online account to access a range of government online services including Medicare, Centrelink and Child Support with one username and password.
